Architects, Draftsmen, & Designers

What´s the difference?

Do you have a project that requires technical rendering or structural design? Make sure you hire the right professional for the job. The following descriptions will provide a thumbnail description of what an architect, designer, and draftsman does and what their scope of expertise is.

  • Architects—A licensed architect is a professional and is governed by professional and state regulations like doctors and lawyers. When they sign off on a design, they are putting their reputation on the line. They are literally responsible for making sure the building doesn't fall down or fall apart. An architect's approval is required by city building codes or home owner association when structural changes are being made.
  • Designers—Experienced designers are capable of taking your ideas and creating visual presentations for interior designers and architects. They are proficient at organizing space, using color, and applying texture. They can provide complex CAD drawings of sections and details. Often an architect will have a designer create elevations
  • Draftsman—A good draftsman can create technical drawings from which contractors and craftsmen can create working drawings. They are knowledgeable about materials and design standards. Good drawings can provide your contractors with all the information they need to provide accurate estimates and that can save you money and energy.

Hiring

Regardless of your project and the scope of work, ask each candidate for the project to provide references and proof of all required licensing and insurance. Ask to see a portfolio of work and examine the work carefully. Depending on the discipline, a contract may be used. If so, make sure that the scope of work is clearly defined, with all payment terms and warranties stipulated.
