Score game space when you remodel
your basement.

Do you need more space and have an unfinished basement? Finishing your basement to create a family room, home theater, game room, office, or guest room could be a cost-effective solution to creating the extra room and storage space you need.

A finished basement can add signifcantly to the value of your home and return the entire cost of the investment when you sell. Relative to the cost, a well-planned remodel can provide as much as a 125% return on investment.

To evaluate your basement for remodeling, answer these questions. If you can meet ALL of the following, your basement could be a good candidate for a remodeling project.

Are floors and walls dry with no water problems? It´s often expensive to treat water related problems in a basement. A licensed contractor, who is experienced with basement remodeling can find problems and make suggestions to correct condensation, seepage, and leaks. An accurate estimate can give you an idea if remodeling is practical or feasible.
Are there stairs already and is there a good emergency route? To meet building codes you need stairs that that are appropriate for a finished living space as well as providing emergency escape routes. This requirement is likely to be rigidly enforced, especially if sleeping quarters are being added.
Are there windows, or can they be added? You need to make a provision for adding windows if they don´t already exist. This could require exterior excavation or be impossible because of location. Not only are ventilation and light important to livabilty, but building codes often require 8–10% of the floor area in window area. Your contractor can suggest cost-effective design solutions.
Will there be adequate headroom for a basement? Most codes mandate a ceiling height of 7 1/2 feet. To achieve that, you´ll likely need at least 8 feet in height to accommodate flooring and ceiling modifications.
